Yardsellr: The social p2p shopping platform
Yardsellr is a new site designed to connect buyers and sellers through facebook and twitter. There are different blocks (yardsale metaphor) that users browse, divided up by category and interests. Users can comment on and like a block, which will add it to their news feed (like if you “like” a page). This will push the newest products in that block to your feed, the frequency of...

Humor blog xkcd has released an updated version of their world map of the online community. It’s based not only on size of the user base, but the amount of talking, sharing, playing and socializing that happens within the given network. Look just how much change has occurred in only three years.

Tech Sector, Slow to Hire, Unlikely to Lead... →
caterpillarcowboy:
Uh, every startup I know is dying to recruit engineering talent. It’s the safe, boring, 9-5 engineering work that is in danger..
Yup…talented, creative and smart people are welcome with open arms. We’ve had to work hard to find our core group. 9-5 isn’t a guarantee here. It ebbs and flows. High on the ebbs…or does it mostly flow?

Am I mayor yet?
dpstyles:
Quick tweak but awesome one. This was a long time coming… (lots and lots of new stuff getting pushed thru queue these days - I love it.)
foursquare:
We made a quick yet long-awaited tweak to our apps today. When you’re getting close to winning a Mayorship (within 10 check-ins), you’ll now see how far away you are from ousting the current Mayor. You’ll see the count in the post...

Information overload is not the problem →
A good reminder from Edward Tufte:
“There is no such thing as information overload, just bad design. If something is cluttered and/or confusing, fix your design.”
This is a deceptively strong statement. It seems to merely be suggesting we don’t blame information overload for the pain it causes, and instead blame design.
On a more subtle level, however, Tufte is asking designers to take...

– AdAge Post by Rupal Parekh and Michael Bush.
At some point, people only care about what you are DOING. Social media is just another way to let people know what you are doing. It isn’t an answer intrinsically.

Mark Coatney
staff:
After spending the last year showing us the unique role Tumblr can play in connecting journalists and readers, we are so proud to have Mark joining our team. He is truly one of the clearest and most creative thinkers around Tumblr. I don’t think we can sum up our excitement better than he has:
Always lead with the news: I’ve decided to leave my position at Newsweek and accept a job at...

– R.I.P. Chatroulette, 2009-2010 - Internet Culture - Salon.com (via heyitsnoah)
I think the Chatroulette phenomenon is a perfect example of the state of the internet today. The problems the tech scene is trying to fix today aren’t real problems. In fact, they’re solutions to problems that the...

– Marty Neumeier in “The Brand Gap”. I am rereading this book slowly to ponder his wisdom and let it swirl in the grey cells. I thought about this quote all weekend. He goes on to explain a charismatic brand’s magical ability to bridge the gap between strategy and creativity. (via gbattle) (via...

BP Oil spill and social media
The team at RWW posted a solid recap on how people have been using the digital space in response to the disaster. Give it all a read, but here is a roundup/summary of the sites they mention: Deepwater Horizon Response (run by BP, Transocean, US Coast Guard, National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration, US Department of Homeland Security & the US department of the Interior) Flickr...

Modernizr is a JavaScript library that helps you branch your CSS depending on the browser’s capabilities. I haven’t tried Modernizr itself yet, but their website is a nice demo of some CSS3 features, like rounded borders, gradients, shadows, reflections, and transitions.
